That actress Sridevi, born in a remote village in Sivakasi, went on to achieve the unthinkable feat of becoming a ‘superstar’ in the male-dominated Hindi film industry is a tribute to the talent, hard-work, dedication and grace that she always sported with pride!
Sridevi had acted opposite all the legends of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi film industries. Entering Bollywood in the late seventies, she reined as the ‘Quee Bee’ of Hindi films from the eighties till the late nineties keeping the likes of the mightily talented Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, etc. at bay. This was after she got the better of Jaya Prada as the top actress in Tamil and Telugu films!
Despite her not-so-fluent Hindi accent, Sridevi earned millions of fans with her unique pronunciation and acting style. Her films such as Mr. India, Maavali, Chandni, Chaalbaaz, Khuda Gawaah, Lamhe, etc. will remain etched in the memories of her fans and movie-goers for many years to come. She made a successful comeback after many years with the 2012 film English Vinglish and also starred in last year’s Mom which ironically became her last film. She has also starred in Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film Zero which is to release this year.
That she attained the enviable status of the country’s first-ever ‘female superstar’ of Hindi films after transcending the language barrier is a great achievement which can probably never be emulated by any other actress; let’s again pray to the Almighty to lay her soul remain in lasting peace!
