It is reported that popular Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film actress Sridevi passed away in Dubai yesterday after she suffered a ‘sudden and massive’ cardiac arrest.
54-year old Sridevi had been to Dubai to attend the marriage ceremony of her nephew Mohit Marwah. Video of her presence at the event on Friday night, dressed as usual in colourful and glittering attire, is being shared like hot cakes across social networking sites.
Born on 13th August, 1963 to Aiyappan and Rajeswari at Meenampatti Village near Sivakasi Tamil Nadu, Sridevi debuted as child-artiste when she was barely 4-years old. Her mesmerizing beauty and amazing diction made her star as a child in films starring the then leading heroes Sivaji Ganesan and the legendary MGR. She debuted as heroine a decade later with K. Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu which, in hindsight, turned out to be the most important film in Sridevil, Kamal Haasan and superstar Rajinikanth’s careers as well.
Succssive hit films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam opposite leading heroes made her the ‘No.1’ heroine after which she migrated to Bollywood and remained the ‘Queen Bee’ for more than a decade with none except the ‘dancing queen’ Madhuri Dixit challenging her rein at the top. The actress came back to acting a few years back with English Vinglish and was last seen in Tamil screen in the non-starter Puli whereas Mom turned out to be her final film in Hindi.
Sridevi fell in love with and married Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor (elder brother of actor Anil Kapoor, against whom Sridevi had starred in more than 10 films as heroine). The couple has two teenage daughters – Jhanvi and Khushi.
Superstar Rajinikanth has mourned the demise of Sridevi, a heroine who had starred opposite him in 22 films (Sridevi has never starred so frequently with any other actor in any language), by tweeting on his Twitter account stating “I’m shocked and very disturbed. I’ve lost a dear friend and the industry has lost a true legend. My heart goes out to her family and friends. I feel the pain with them. She will be missed…”
Let’s pray to the Almighty to lay Sridevi’s soul in lasting peace!
Thanks for all the good memories, Sri!
