Producer-director-actor Samuthirakani, who won the national award for ‘best supporting actor’ for his role in Vetrimaaran’s award-winning film Visaranai, has said that actor Udhayanidhi was chosen to play the lead role in Nimir by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan after he set aside the names of at least ten actors for the role.
Udhayanidhi, Mollywood’s Namitha Pramod, Parvathy Nair, Samuthirakani and director Mahendran play the lead roles in Nimir, which brings Priyadarshan back to mainstream Tamil films after more than a decade after making the award-winning Kanchivaram in 2007. Santhosho Kuruvilla produces Nimir which has music by the duo of Darbuka Siva & Ajneesh Loknath. Ekambaram is the film’s cinematographer.
“We had no songs ready with us when we shot the film; I simply re-did what Priyadarshan told me to do. He had helped a lot in getting into the skin of my character. As a young boy, I had always been fascinated by Mahendran Sir’s films and it was indeed a great honour for me to have worked with him in this film,” Udhayanidhi said while speaking at the film’s audio-launch.
He also said it was a ‘heartening’ experience to work with Samuthirakani and learn the nuances of acting. “Priyadarshan hadn’t seen any of my films but called me one day to tell that I should play the hero in his next directorial venture. I replied to him saying ‘yes’ and said that I’m ready to do whatever role he gave me in his films to be made in future,” he added.
Samuthirakani spilled the beans how Priyadarshan chose Udhayanidhi for his role in the film. “I recommended the names of 10 actors but Priyadarshan rejected all those names and opted to cast Udhayanidhi,” said Samuthirakani who plays a significant role in the film besides penning the dialogues. Udhayanidhi’s Red Giant Films has produced the film which is to release in theatres in March.
