I Lost a Few Film Offers as I Was ‘too Beautiful’, Says Deepika

Actress Deepika Padukone, India’s Hollywood-bound Bollywood actress and who starred opposite superstar Rajinikanth in the 3-D animation film Kochhadaiyaan a few years back, has said that she lost out the chance to star in quite a few films as she was told that she looked ‘too beautiful’ than what the characters were supposed to be.

Under fire from certain quarters including the ruling BJP at the Centre for playing the controversial role of Chittoor Queen Padmavati in her upcoming film titled after the queen’s name, Deepika has successfully completed a decade in films after debuting as Shah Rukh Khan’s heroine in the successful Om Shanti Om in 2007. One of the most sought-after, successful, talented and controversial frontline heroine in Bollywood, Deepika has also spoken about the sex-for-film offer issue during a recent interview.

“Many told me before I entered films that I would get film offers only if I ‘adjusted’ with producers. Thankfully enough, I wasn’t forced to do so as I got many film offers on my own. I feel absolutely secured in Bollywood but not many actresses feel so.

“I have lost out the offers to star in a few films because of my beauty; a director, with whom I have worked in two films so far, once told me that he wanted to cast me in a particular script of his but added that I was ‘too beautiful’ to be considered to play the protagonist he had in mind.

“Film-makers ought to know that heroines are ready to take whatever trouble they can in ‘converting’ themselves to become suitable to play any role on-screen,” she said. Deepika, referred to fondly as ‘Dippy’ in Bollywood, said that she had risen to the top position only because of her hard-work. “I didn’t get anything overnight; only my family and my team are aware of the pains I had to endure along the way,” she recalls.
