The first-day theatrical collections of actor Vijay’s Deepavali film Mersal have overtaken the corresponding collections of Ajith Kumar’s latest film Vivegam which hit the screens a few months back.
Directed by Atlee Kumar and starring Vijay in triple roles opposite Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha and Nithya Menen, Mersal faced huge pre-release blues before finally hitting the screens on Wednesday (Deepavali) in theatres across the globe. The crises that the film faced prior to its release served as ‘free publicity’ to the film as fans and movie-goers thronged halls screening the film in huge numbers on its first day.
The film collected Rs.1.48 crores on its first day in theatres in Chennai, beating Ajith’s Vivegam which collected Rs.1.21 crores. As per trade pundit Taran Adarsh’s version, the film collected Rs.3.08 crores in U.S. thanks to the premiere shows. It continued to do well in countries such as England and Australia.
The Austrialian figure on the first day stands at Rs.68.01 lakhs while it did very well in England to have raked up Rs.81.08 lakhs on its first day. South East Asian countries such as Malaysia and Singapore too fared better, with Malaysia reporting a whopping collection of Rs.90.31 lakhs on the first day itself!
