Deepavali and Pongal are usually the ‘big’ D-Days as far as the Tamil film industry is concerned. However, the situation has undergone a drastic change in this year as only four films have been lined up to release in theatres next Wednesday on Deepavali.
Vijay’s Atlee Kumar-directed Mersal, Nayantara’s Arram, Sarathkumar’s Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2 and Sasikumar’s Kodiveeran have been lined up to vie for box-office honours on Deepavali. However, with just less than four days to go for Deepavali, it remains highly doubtful whether these films would release in theatres as planned.
The reluctance by theatres to cancel online reservation fee and to shy away from collection parking fee, as stipulated by the Producers’ Council, has been playing spoilsport in new films releasing in theatres for the past two weeks. Also joining the Deepavali race is the film Meyaadha Maan which stars television actress-hostess Priya Bhawanishankar and Vaibhav in the lead and produced by director Karthik Subbaraj.
It remains to be seen whether theatres would agree to implement the new cost of tickets as recommended by the State as they gear up to release new films after staying away from releasing them demanding the rollback of entertainment tax by the State Govt. A clear picture on the number of films releasing on Deepavali might emerge by this evening, it is believed.
