Actress-turned-politician Nagma called on superstar Rajinikanth at his Poes Garden residence yesterday in what is termed by political analysts as an ‘attempt’ by the Congress to get the ‘man of the masses’ to align with it.
42-year old Nagma, who sports spectacles now, had starred in a solitary film Baashha (more than two decades back) with Rajini in what is believed by millions of fans of him as the latter’s ‘best-ever’ on-screen performance. Nagma, half-sister of actress Jyothika, starred in many films throughout the nineties before she found the offers drying up.
Now the general secretary of the All India Mahila Congress (women’s wing of the Congress), Nagma called on Rajini and was welcomed warmly by the latter. In the recent past, Rajini had been meeting politicians from all political parties and even wished BJP’s Gangai Amaren success in the now-abandoned R.K. Nagar by-polls which were to be held on 12th April.
BJP attempted to make Rajini as the Presidential candidate but shelved the idea after the latter didn’t evince any interest in the proposal. Congress, which has been lagging far behind in Tamil Nadu, is said to be making an effort to get Rajini to side with them by making Nagma talk to him. Speaking to newsmen later, Nagma denied that politics figured in her discussion with her Baashha hero.
“It is upto Rajini to either float a new party or align himself with any existing party,” Nagma said and added that personally, she wanted Rajini to be in politics. “Rajini is sure to succeed if he takes to politics as people have plenty of love, affection, faith and hope in him,” she concluded.
