Kollywood is planning to observe in a grand manner the upcoming 100th birth anniversary of the late and legendary MGR.
MGR, the first actor in the world to take to politics and succeed in a huge manner, was an undisputed superstar of Tamil films for more than two decades before entering politics and remaining as the chief-minister of Tamil Nadu for more than ten years till his demise in 1987.
It was he who was the founder-president of the AIADMK which was later taken to greater heights by Jayalalithaa.
Speaking to newsmen, film-maker R.K. Selvamani said that the film industry planned to observe MGR’s birth centenary in a grand manner for the whole year.
“To start with, a huge inaugural ceremony would be held in Abirami Mall on 17th January (Tuesday). MGR’s classical hit film Aayirathil Oruvan would be screened on that day in Abirami Complex. All theatres would be celebrating MGR’s birth anniversary.
“MGR’s 136 films would be screened in various theatres across the State for the whole year in a phased manner. We want to join hands with the Govt. of Tamil Nadu in celebrating the occasion. The Nadigar Sangam, Tamil Film Producers’ Council and the Directors’ Association are jointly organizing these celebrations,” he said.
