Films not the reason for love-based killings in the State: Vijay Sethupathi

Killing of women who have either spurned or didn’t respond to love proposals from men have been on the rise in the State. Social activists say that increasing incidents in films’ scripts depicting an ordinary looking guy proposing to a very pretty-looking heroine and succeeding in winning her heart might have propelled ordinary youths in doing the same. When their proposals didn’t receive positive response, they turn(ed) killers, they point out.

Speaking at the recent meet-the-press event held in connection with the release of his upcoming film Rekka, Vijay Sethupathi said “Films can’t impose anything in the minds of fans who love certain sequences by applauding.

They won’t take films very seriously so as to implement it in real life. I can’t accept that films are the reason for increasing number of such killings.

“Those who indulge in violence are basically violent-minded and give vent to their feelings by doing so; this being the case, how can anyone blame films?” he asked.
