Director of Yaanai Mel Kuthirai Savaari cries foul by the Censors

Director-of-Yaanai-Mel-Kuthirai-Savaari-cries-foul-by-the-CensorsDirector of the film Yaanai Mel Kuthirai Savaari has lamented that the Censors don’t seem to have a specific yardstick in granting ‘U’ or ‘A’ or ‘U/A’ certification to films.

He refers to the recent sequences in a frontline hero’s film wherein a finger was shown to fly in the air after it was hit by a bullet. “Despite this and many other violent sequences in the film, it got away with an ‘U’ certificate. My film, which has only one-tenth of such violent sequences, has been granted ‘A’ certificate,” says Karuppiah Murugan, director of the film.

‘Mottai’ Rajendran plays the lead role in the film which releases in theatres today but the ‘A’ certificate (not displayed, though, in advertisements in the print media) is what is disturbing the director.

“I made a film to entertain children and adults with a clean, non-violent story. Myself and my friends have invested all our money into making the film and were finally stumped by the Censors who gave an ‘A’ certificate to the film.

“Only one sequence is there wherein a stabbing (shown in ‘out-of-focus’ mode) is shown in the film; ironically, the sequences has been cut and still we got ‘A’. If small films like ours get ‘A’ certificate, we face plenty of problems in taking them to theatres, distributing and releasing them,” says Murugan even as the film releases today!
