Actress Priyamani has landed herself in a huge controversy in an emotional outburst when she was commenting about a brutal gang rape-and-murder of a 30-year old Law Student in Kerala.
Even as the whole country has reacted sharply to the gruesome rape and murder of the girl named Jisha (whose intestine was reportedly removed by the attackers) who was stabbed in at least 30 places all over her body, there have been huge cries of enforcing strict laws and awarding severe punishment to harassment/rape offenders.
“I was shocked to read about the rape and murder of Jisha; I feel that women can no more life in safety in India and they would have to migrate to other countries where they feel they could live safely. If such incidents continue unabated, we can’t live happily and peacefully in our own motherland.
“It is said that Indians consider women as the form of ‘Goddess Shakthi’; if this is the case, how could such brutal acts of rape and murder occur here? I feel India has to enact tougher rape laws like the ones in force in Arab countries for such things not to recur in future,” she said.
While netizens have supported and opposed her views on social networking sites, the comment by a national award-winning actress that women don’t feel safe in India and that they should consider migrating to ‘safer’ countries has evoked a huge controversy.
