Mahendran, one of the most celebrated directors in Kollywood who hasn’t been making films for more than two decades now and who played the antagonist in Vijay’s latest film Theri, has revealed that it was Kamal Haasan who helped him in completing and releasing the super-hit Rajini-Shobha starrer Mullum Malarum in 1978.
Mahendran was the chief-guest at the recently held audio launch of Vikram Prabhu’s upcoming film Wagah. Speaking at the event, Mahendran said “I’m not a natural film personality but was forced into movie-making.
However, it was Kamal Haasan who urged me to make my directorial debut in 1978 with Rajini’s Mullum Malarum. I wanted to make the film in my style and it was Kamal who introduced me to Balu Mahendra who worked as the film’s cinematographer.
“When the film’s shoot was almost complete except canning of the Senthazampoovil song and a few sequences, the producer had no more funds to proceed with the film and decided to release the film without (shooting) the song another sequence.
I felt bad and discussed with Kamal who finally decided to sponsor the shoot of the song and the remaining sequence. Rest, as they say, was history.
“We now know how important the song was for the film’s success and popularity. In many ways, Kamal is responsible for my growth as a director,” recalled Mahendran.
