Vimal’s plea for city-based scripts finds few takers

VimalVimal, whose latest film Mapla Singam hit the screens a couple of weeks back, finds himself in ‘no man’s land’ now that his last few films have failed to click at the box-office.

Vimal’s track record for the past few years even bettered the likes of Ajith, Suriya and Vijay in terms of the number of offers he had been getting.

His call-sheet dates stood booked for the next couple of years as per the status which prevailed in January, 2015. Vimal’s fee per film was very less compared to frontline heroes and producers signed him up in their films as they made mostly low or medium-budgets with him.

These films, known as ‘minimum guarantee films’ in industry parlance, kept Vimal going but his career has taken a huge beating with successive failures in the form of Kaaval, Anjala and Mapla Singam.

This has resulted in Vimal, who had been getting Rs.70 lakhs per film as his fee, reducing his fee to as low as Rs.20 lakhs. Despite reduction in fees, he finds few takers as his condition baffles them.

Vimal is said to have told a few producers who recently approached him with new film projects that he had become ‘fed’ up of starring in rural subjects and that he only wanted city-based scripts now. Knowing that his forte was only in rural-based scripts, the producers beat a hasty retreat!
