‘All ‘A’ rated films are not sex films’- director Padmamagan

Netru Indru Movie Hot StillsPadmamagan’s production and directorial venture ‘Netru Indru’ which is ready to hit the screens in June has been awarded a ‘A’ certificate by Censor Board. It is to be noted the Tamilnadu Government’s 30% Entertainment Tax Exemption can be availed by only by the film that have a ‘U’ certificate.

Speaking on why his film was accorded an ‘A’ certificate, the director said “one of the main characters in my film is of a sex worker who travels with five men. I knew very well that the film is likely to lose ‘U’ certificate just because of this character.

I did not want to beat around the bush in the name of love and my script depicts all the five men trying to woo her for sex. With these sequences I have dealt sex in a humorous way, while my previous film ‘Ammuvagia Naan’ handled sex in a very serious way.

I have also stressed the importance of using condoms while having unprotected sex. Moreover in the climax of the film, the sex worker character will be elevated to a new level and the audience will understand the necessity for the inclusion of the character in the film. When the Censor officers gave ‘A’ certificate after watching the film.

I tried my best to change the rating to ‘U’ explaining the importance of the sequences. However the board officials said they understand the necessity of the scenes and also appreciated the way the scenes have been dealt with, but they cannot go against the rules.

They offered to give a ‘U’ certificate if I part with two to three reels of my film. But I rejected the offer and decided to go ahead with the ‘A’ rating since chopping of that many scenes will considerably reduce the length of the 120 minute long film”.

Padmamagan rues that since the TN Government gives Tax exemption only to ‘U’ rated films distributors backed by corporate houses do not show interest in movies with ‘A’ certificate. This restricts the freedom of creators.

Padmamagan says, beyond this what pains him more is that people have started seeing him as a sex film director just because his film has received an Adults Only certificate. Padmamagan emphasizes that all ‘A’ rated films are not sex films. To validate his argument Padmamagan recounted a list of ‘A’ rated films that did not have excessive sleaze content.

“MGR’s ‘Marmagyogi’ that released in 1950s was the first Tamil film to get an ‘A’ rating. Even Bharathiraja’s debut film ’16 Vayathinile’, Balumahendra’s classic film ‘Moondram Pirai’ and Rajinikanth’s superhit film ‘Netrikkan’ had released with ‘A’ rating and all these films were highly appreciated by critics as well as general audiences” pointed the director.
