The Tamil word ‘Purampokku’ is being used to refer ‘wasteland’ and it is often used to refer to a useless person in normal Tamil discourse. So what made S.P.Jananathan select such a word considered as a demeaning term as the title of the film he is directing after a gap of five years? Does the title convey anything?
Jananathan has given answers to these questions in a reason interview. The ‘Iyarkai’ director clarifies that only now ‘Purampokku’ is used to refer to wasteland.
But the term was originally meant to refer to a land that was common to all like a lake or a graveyard. In other words ‘Purampokku’ actually refers to a piece of land that is useful to all.
Jananathan adds that since the film’s protagonist is a person who lives for others, he felt ‘Purampokku’ will be the apt title and finalized the same.
‘Purampokku’ has Arya, Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam and Karthika Nair in lead characters.
