S Sukumari who was admitted in a private nursing home passed away yesterday evening. She was admitted in the hospital because she got burn injuries. Her sari caught fire when she was lighting a lamp in her residence to pray.
This incident took place on 27th February. She was aged 74. Chief Minister Jayalalitha also visited her in the hospital. At this juncture, she passed away because of heart attack. Her husband was the famous film director Bhimsingh who passed away a few years back.
She has a son called Suresh. Members of the film fraternity are paying their final tribute to her. Born in 1940 in then Travancore, Sukumari began her career at the age of 10 with a cameo in Tamil movie ‘Oru Iravu’ in 1951.She was in the field for more than five decades.
She has acted in over 2,500 films, including in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Oriya and Bengali. A versatile actor, she shared the screen with big names, including Mamooty, Mohanlal, Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan and also yesteryear stars MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Nageswara Rao and Prem Nazir. The funeral rites will take place today.
