Imman does not prefer ‘item’ songs

ImmanMusic director D. Imman is busy with 4-5 projects on hand at present. The bespectacled director, who passed out of Chennai’s Pachaiyappa’s College, has opined that he loves composing melodies and folk but does not prefer when is forced to compose ‘item number’ songs.

Imman debuted as music director in Tamil films way back in 2002 with the Vijay-Priyanka Chopra starrer Thamizhan which wasn’t a hit film. Despite allegations that Imman’s music has ‘traces’ of a particular music director, Imman went on to garner name and fame and has now come to be recognized as one of the leading music directors of his generation.

Mynaa by director Prabhu Solomon more than a couple of years ago played a very big part in Imman’s career. Last year’s Manam Kothi Paravai and the successful Kumki which has just gone past the 50-day mark in all the centres, has also upped his status as a music director of repute in the industry. Imaaan launched a website recently by name ‘Immanity’ wherein he seeks to update all info about him to his fans and to the general internet users.

Speaking to reporters recently, he said that it was a welcome trend that the number of ‘item number’ songs in films has come down considerably in recent times. “In fact, it’s a healthy trend; I hate the very mention of ‘item songs’ in films. Earlier, four out of five songs in a film would be ‘item numbers’ and we used to argue with directors that there ought to be at least a couple of melodies. The situation is changing for good now.

“Gaana numbers and folk songs are far better than the ‘item song’ numbers. It’s the scripts which determine the songs and the kind of music a film gets. At the same time, the director’s penchant for music and his musical preferences also play an important role here. I don’t believe in recording the songs in a foreign country and all my songs thus far have been composed in our own Chennai.

“It depends on the individual; I love to compose sitting in the comfort of my house or my studio. It’s almost equivalent to sitting on the floor and casually eating a lunch or breakfast in our house,” says Imman.
