Filmmaker Kayaar, Bharathiraja and the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce came together to express their support for Kamal Haasan’s initiative in releasing his upcoming film Viswaroopam first on television via DTH hours before it hits the screens worldwide on 11th January.
The warring faction of the Tamil Film Producers’ Council is headed by Kayaar who addressed newspersons yesterday after a meeting held to discuss Kamal’s move.
“Kamal is a genius who understands the growth of science and technology rather well. His effort can hardly go wrong as it is based on a thoughtful decision. This manner of releasing films on telly via DTH has created a new avenue for producers to earn money. We shouldn’t forget that it was Kamal who first released his Apoorva Sagodharargal overseas and showed us a way of making money, which we’re following now. Kamal did so at a time when we didn’t even know that such an avenue existed.
“Even major production houses are suffering due to cash-crunch today and the DTH release could solve their financial difficulties in a big way. We’re in support of Kamal’s efforts in this regard. This year, among the 148 films which have been released thus far, only 8 are termed as ‘hit’ ventures. Even they weren’t super-duper hit films but were just ordinary hits.
“The argument that releasing a film on DTH would affect its run in theaters is totally unacceptable. Not all the films can be watched on small-screen. Films made with grandeur would appeal to the audiences only when they watch it on big-screen in cinema halls. We’re sure Viswarooopam would be patronized in a big way by Kamal’s fans and audiences. Our group and the Film Chamber are fully in support of Kamal’s initiatives,” he concluded.
