Simbu wanted Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya

Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya

Ever since proud dad T. Rajendran put the Little Superstar before a camera, Simbu has been the punch dialogue-delivering mass actor. Even as a child artiste, he was the know-all kid showering advice and doling out wisecracks. So if he did another role on the lines of Sonal Dhan Kadhala or even Kaalai, it would hardy make news. But his cleaned-up look for Guatam Menon’s Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya has caught everybody’s attention. In his gentleman guise, he looks super cool and is completely devoid of those mass hero traits (which are jarring for some). And it does seem like he will be playing a more subtle guy in a very sweet romance, unlike his usual cine avatars.

“Both of us wanted a change from our usual type of film. I wanted to do a love story like Minnale and asked Gautham if we could work on a script like that. Both of us fell in love with the script of Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya instantly,” he says. He’s not fed up of the mass movies, he just wants to dabble with something different. “I can always reach out to the elite. But I believe I must be identifiable by the masses,” he says, justifying his choice of films prior to and after Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya.

So if he wants to attract the masses, is he aiming for Superstar heights? “The era of the superstars was a decade ago. I dream of being more than a superstar. I think it’s important that one knows many areas of filmmaking to make it big. Kollywood’s next big trend will be being multifaceted,” says Simbu, who, like his dad, has tried his hand at everything that goes into making a movie.

Whether you are his fan or not, you have to appreciate his passion for cinema and his ‘don’t care attitude’ about media criticism. Let’s just hope that Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya inspires him to do more quality films which attract the masses, without having to overact in the name of mass movies.
