En Iniya Tamizh Makkale

For the first time in the history of Tamil films, the audio of a Tamil film was launched in Singapore! Singapore’s National Development minister Mr. Manohar and Oli FM president Ms. Geetha launched the audio of En Iniya Tamizh Makkale in Singapore recently.

You might be wondering why the favourite opening line of Bharathi Raja’s speeches has been chosen for the title?! That is because that film highlights the effects of brain drain – the emigration of educated and skilled youth, their seeking bettor opportunities in foreign countries. The film also places emphasis on another form of brain drain – where the youth of Indian villages and towns move to its cities in search of “greener pastures” – a migration that goes unnoticed often but has serious effects on ecological balance.

Produced by S.M. Bala and Sekaran for B Talkies, En Iniya Tamizh Makkale is all about the protagonist who sets off a revolution while he attempts to stop this migration of talent. The film is made with two Singapore-based NRIs – Aadhavan and Pari; Ponni, a model from Kerala, plays the female lead role.

As a highlight and a lesson to youth who consider working in foreign countries an attractive option, the film also narrates a small but thought-provoking real-life incident which affected Cheran, a tailor from a small village. Cheran was one of the many villagers who considered Dubai a Utopia; he sold all the property he possessed, went to Dubai to work as a tailor, but sadly ended up doing menial jobs he had spurned in his village. Bala and Sekaran have made hims play himself in the movie to show our youth that the grass is not always greener on the other side.
