International Women's Day

8th March is International Women’s Day. And women form an integral part of cinema. The portayal of women in cinema all over the world has changed over the years, but a lot more needs to be done for women in cinema.

Evenn today in Indian cinema is extremely difficult for married actresses, wanting to continue their career, to find good roles. For that matter, even otherwise actresses in Indian cinema are mostly restricted to the song and dance routine. Few films are made for women and fewer films have strong women characters. Despite that Indian women have made a mark in cinema, not only in front of the camera, but behind the sceneas well. We have women in almost every department of cinema.

Cinema may be a man’s world but Indian television is indeed a woman’s domain. The television medium is for women, by women and of women- a true representaton of democracy! The Radikaas, Khushbus and Ekta Kapoors are the queens of the medium and have proved time and again they are the mistresses of the small screen. Some of them have also ventured into big screen production and they are sure to rule there as well.

TamilWire.net salutes all the women in media, who have made a name for themsleves with their sheer grit, hard work and of course loads of confidence and style.
