Kanchivaram to release on March 13th

Filmmaker Priyadarshan’s Kanchivaram, a realistic tale about the silk weavers of Tamil Nadu, is all set to hit screens on March 13th. The flick, starring Prakashraj and Shreya Reddy in the lead roles, is produced by Shailendra Singh.

Kanchivaram depicts the grim, hands-to-mouth existence of the silk weavers of South India of the pre-independence era. The protagonist Vengadam, essayed by veteran actor Prakashraj, is a widower who weaves silk saris to earn his daily bread and fend for his daughter’s welfare. Though Vengadam has faced a lot of financial setbacks and personal tragedies in life, he is contented with his daily affairs and meagre earning. Yet, the poor weaver holds one unfulfilled desire in his heart – to weave a silk sari for his daughter. How he manages to do it by pilfering small amounts of silk and how this gets him into trouble forms the rest of the story.

A tragic rendition of the lives of weavers, Kanchivaram is sure to move movie-goers’ hearts. Priyadarshan says that the film has been made for himself and is very close to his heart. “I have to think of what people will think before starting commercial movies, but this film, I made for myself.” said the ace director at a press meet. The movie recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where it won a lot of critical acclaim. The movie also had a grand premiere in Mumbai couple of months ago.

This is Priyadarshan’s next release after SRK-starrer Billu. Kanchivaram will be a new entrant in the reality genre of films that Tamil industry has been producing lately.
