It is indeed a matter of pride for superstar Rajinikanth – while he continues to reign supreme at the box-office even today, his yesteryear hits are also being remade with wonderful results! After Billa, yet another Rajinikanth film, Murattu Kalai (also referred to as Murattukkalai), is being remade. Starring Rajinikanth and Rathi Agnihotri in the lead, the film was a rage in the 80s.
The remake stars Sundar C. and Sneha in the lead roles and Sindhu Tolaani in an important role; she has replaced the sexy and gorgeous Samiksha, who was the original choice. Recently, this remake completed two rounds of shooting in Thalaikonam.
Suman, who re-emerged in Kollywood with Sivaji, will play the villain (the role played by charismatic Jaishankar in the original). Vivek and Thyagu will reprise the roles of Surali Rajan and “Thengai” Sreenivasan respectively.
Since the original film is 25 years old, minor script modifications have been made to suit modern tastes. But the evergreen song ‘Pothuvaga Emmanasu Thangam’ and Murattu Kalai are inseparable – so the filmmakers are retaining it without marring its originality, but in a slightly remixed avataar.
Gunanithi Amritham, who gave the hits Madurai Meenakshi and Manasu Rendum Puthusu 13 years ago, is the producer of this remake. K. Selvabharathy is the director. Srikanth Deva composes the music and Santario (of Dishyum fame) is the cinematographer.
