The film is based on the true incident famously known as Komagata Maru incident or tragedy. In the early years of the twentieth century, Canada (under British rule) restricted immigration of Indians in an attempt to make Canada “a land of whites” by changing the immigration laws. But in 1914, a rich Indian fisherman named Gurdit Singh living in Singapore unsuccessfully tried to challenge this law to help 376 compatriots to immigrate to Canada, to showcase to the world the “racist laws of British Canada”, to make it realize that the British are settlers themselves and that everyone has equal rights to explore the “new world”.

In essence, the incident showcased the Indians’ love of freedom, equality and self-respect. They tried to show the world that they would not tolerate imperialism.

This is Akshay Kumar’s dream project. It is learnt that Shriya Saran is absolutely happy to have bagged a role in this film which has the potential of being included with the greatest epics like La Amistad which speak of equality in human beings. And she has one more reason to be happy – Deepa Mehta, whom she respects a lot and is comfortable with, after having worked with her in What’s Cooking, Stella?
